Frequently Asked Questions:

Counseling Groups

  • Most of our groups have between four and eight group members. Our groups can have as few as three members and as many as ten.

  • Yes! Most people are nervous about some aspect of joining a group, and they find that their comfort and confidence in the group grow over time. During your phone screening, you can ask questions and plan for how the group facilitators can support you.

  • Group counseling is as effective as individual counseling for a wide range of concerns. In some cases, group counseling can be even more effective than individual counseling. Groups can be particularly helpful for people experiencing interpersonal challenges, loneliness, or shame. They can also benefit individuals who are looking for feedback, new perspectives, and other people with shared experiences.

  • It is common to wonder if there will be other group members with similar identities around race, gender, sexuality, ability, age, and more. During your phone screening, we are happy to discuss how your identities may fit in with other group members while respecting privacy and confidentiality.

  • Many people find attending virtual groups accessible, comfortable, and effective. We ask that group members have their cameras on and consider unmuting and hiding self-view to replicate sitting in the same room as much as possible.

  • All group members and facilitators are expected to keep information shared in the group confidential, including the identities of group members.

  • We ask that group members not see or contact each other outside of group sessions for the duration of the group. At the end of a group series, some group members choose to share contact information and stay in touch socially.

  • You have three sessions to decide if the group is a good fit for you. After the third session, we ask that you attend all group sessions unless you are ill or an emergency arises.
