Meet Theresa, CWHC Marathon Runner! Joining Team CWHC for her first marathon, Theresa brings enthusiastic playlists and a love for CWHC to her runs.

Q: What’s your marathon running history?
A: I have run three half marathons, but this will be my first full marathon. It’s been on my bucket list for a while, and I’m excited for this challenge!

Q: Tell us about your strategy for running-what do you do to stay focused, to keep going, and to enjoy yourself while running?
A: I either run to music (Janelle Monae or Robyn), which often helps me to remain unaware of how much effort I’m exerting on my runs. I’m also typically a solo runner, so I use the time to myself to think. It’s particularly satisfying, especially during outdoor runs in parks, or near the lake.

Q: What would be your top recommendation to new runners or runners just starting to explore longer runs?
A: It sounds cheesy, but take it one step at a time. You won’t be able to run a mile, a 5K, or a half marathon on your first attempt. It is not fun at first, but once you hit that first mile it becomes easier. Also, make sure to have at least one or two days of rest per week—that will help keep your spirit and your strength up.

Q: Why do you want to run with Team CWHC?
A: I am a HUGE fan of the Chicago Women’s Health Center. I’ve been a patient there for the past couple of years, due to some poor treatment that I received at my prior health care center. Once I saw that they would sponsor individuals that wanted to run the marathon for them, I jumped at the chance. They are a non-judgmental and caring health care center that has been a necessary part of my self-care for over five years now.

Q: Finish this sentence: I believe in revolutionary health care…
A: Because everyone should have access to compassionate, affordable, and competent health care.
