October Volunteer of the Month: Riley!
Posted on October 15
Q: How long have you been volunteering at CWHC?
A: 5 months
Q: What do you spend your time doing outside of CWHC?
A: I work at Bloom Yoga Studio as a massage therapist, and I teach anatomy to massage students at the New School for Massage. I play music and sing with my roommates (we're calling ourselves The Living Room Band), and when I feel like leaving my Living Room, I go out swing dancing.
Q: How did you get into massage therapy?
A: I wanted to understand my own body, and to learn how to be more comfortable in it. I have scoliosis (a curvy spine), and have experienced various discomforts from that throughout my life. Massage school was the beginning of a profound journey toward self-awareness and self-love. Now, five years later, I feel an ease and joy in my physical being that I could not have imagined. And I'm sure there's only more improvement to come!
Q: Did you grow up in Chicago?
A: Nope. I grew up in Ashland, Virginia. I went to college in Baltimore, and then came here after I graduated. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision, and I had never set foot in Chicago before I moved here, but it's one of the best life decisions I've made. I've been here five years, and I love it and feel at home.
Q: What three words would you use to describe CWHC?
A: Inviting. Genuine. Connected.
