Becoming Safely Embodied

Meets Wednesdays from 7pm-8:30pm, October-December 2011

Trauma can have a severe impact on the way a survivor lives life, even long after the traumatic event is over. Because trauma affects the body, as well as the mind, the body can feel unsafe, serving as reminders of past experiences. This might result in difficulty experiencing our body and breath, absent-mindedness, dissociation, a sense of not being fully present, difficulty in relationships, being emotionally overwhelmed, self-doubt and difficulty achieving goals, emotional shut-down and/or frequent experiences of being "triggered."

In this 12-week group for women and trans people, we will focus on tools and techniques to live more safely and grounded in the body. These techniques can help the survivor foster a sense of belonging, cultivate mindful awareness, learn to deal with the effects of intrusive thoughts and be more present to self, and take steps towards personal goals. An in-office intake with our co-facilitators will begin the registration process. The fee per session is $40 and a sliding scale is available.

To register or for more information, please contact Christina Watkins at 773-935-6126 x308 or cw@chicagowomenshealthcenter.org

Fertility Awareness groups

Fertility Awareness Class

With only a couple of minutes a day, you can acquire abundant practical information about your fertility. You can learn the key to unlock the mystery of your own menstrual cycle and better understand your body. CWHC offers a 2 1/2 hour Fertility Awareness class for you to learn more about fertility monitoring for the purpose of either preventing or aiding pregnancy. Classes are inclusive and affirming of both single people and couples of all gender and sexual identities.

Fertility Awareness is a scientifically proven method that can be used either for birth control or as an aid to become pregnant. The method is based on charting daily basal body temperatures and observations of cervical mucus. This class is also a great way to learn more about the menstual cycle and basic female anatomy and physiology. Using the information you can you can:

* Feel in control when you see your health care providers.
* Understand the difference between normal cervical discharge and abnormal discharge from an infection.
* Identify the fertile time in each cycle
* Find patterns in seemingly irregular cycles
* Become more in touch with your cycles, which can give you a head start on predicting everything from pregnancy to menopause

What is Fertility Awareness?

Fertility Awareness (FA) is a method of birth control with no hormones, chemicals, prescriptions, fittings or side effects; it is completely user-controlled and extremely low cost. When practiced carefully and correctly, fertility awareness is almost as effective as most hormonal methods of birth control. If used perfectly and you abstain from intercourse during fertile phases, it has a 98% success rate. Many people use barrier methods combined with Fertility Awareness to prevent pregnancy.

FA is also a wonderful method for those who are trying to become pregnant. FA can pinpoint the perfect time to introduce sperm, which is especially helpful for people who do not have easy access to sperm.
