Name Change Mobilization 2012!
Posted on March 16
The Transformative Justice Law Project (TJLP) is seeking individuals interested in helping trans and gender non-conforming people change their names. The TJLP is a collective of radical lawyers, social workers, activists, and community organizers who are deeply committed to prison abolition, transformative justice, and gender self-determination.
One of TJLP’s many projects is assisting individuals in legally changing their names. This effort is part of the long-term goal of gender self-determination for all, free of government limitation. TJLP is thrilled to announce that last year’s Name Change Mobilization was a huge success. With the work of amazing volunteers, 40 people received name changes through the Mobilization in 2011. With your help, 2012 will be an even greater success!
During the Name Change Mobilization, attorneys and trained volunteers help transgender and gender non-conforming folks file petitions to change their names legally at the Daley Center in downtown Chicago on the last Friday of every month. Volunteers provide follow-up support services to accompany folks to their court dates and help participants navigate the changing identity documents at the Department of Motor Vehicles, Social Security Office, Department of Vital Records, etc.
If you are interested in being a part of the Name Change Mobilization, join the training session to become a volunteer name change advocate! If you have any questions about the training, or would like more information, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or 773-272-1822.
