Getting to Know Your Pelvis through Yoga!
Posted on June 1
If you live in a human body, you have a pelvis. But if asked to locate the muscles of your pelvis, could you? You might know how strong your leg muscles are, but how about your pelvic floor muscles, or your "core" abdominal muscles (nope, your six pack aren't the muscles that really support your back!).
Did you know that weakness or tension in the muscles of your pelvis (including the deep abdominal muscles) can contribute to:
• chronic lower back, hip or pelvic pain
• leakage when coughing, running, jumping or exercising
• frequent unproductive trips to the bathroom
• Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
• pelvic organ prolapse
• pelvic pain syndromes
Pregnancy and childbirth can also have a significant effect on your pelvic health, whether or not you had a C-section. And contrary to popular belief, if your pelvic muscles are healthy and toned, you do not have to look forward to leaking/incontinence as an inevitable part of aging. From the point of view of yoga, imbalance in the pelvic area can also affect your sense of your own power, creativity and sexuality.
This introductory workshop for female-identified individuals will focus on how yoga can help build awareness, strength, and flexibility in the pelvic floor and deep abdominal muscles, thus affecting your overall health and well-being. Becoming informed can not only help with existing issues but can also help to prevent future problems.
No previous experience necessary, this workshop is accessible to individuals with lots, little, or no yoga experience.
The class will be taught by Francine Kelley, a volunteer counselor at CWHC and a yoga instructor who has experienced the healing benefits of yoga for her own pelvic pain & lower back issues. For specific questions about the workshop, you can call Francine at 773-531-8513 or email email@example.com
